Server:A server is a computer that is connected to the internet that is specially configured to "serve" files to other machines connected to the internet. In other words, a server hosts internet sites. Every internet site you can access through your web browser is housed on a server somewhere. Most servers are powerful computers hooked up to the net by super fast data lines. The Shopsite Server is on a T3, which can transfer data at 44.736 Megabytes per second. Many other servers are on T1 connections, which transfer data at 1.544 Megabytes per second. To put that into perspective, the average modem transfers at 28.8 Kilobytes per second, which means that a T3 is 1553 times faster than a modem.
The ShopSite Manager software must reside on a server in order to work. A personal computer could run it quite well, provided it had enough RAM. However, though it would be possible to run a server over a 28.8 modem line, it would not be very practical unless only one or two people accessed that site at a time.
